Foster A Pet

"Fostering is an opportunity to spend some concentrated time helping animals in need. The rewards are many: The dogs are always so happy to see me. They love the personal attention, and enjoy being able to play outside rather than being locked in a cage or kennel. I get to witness their rapid growth as they change right before my eyes. It is a responsibility, but it's also incredibly fulfilling."
— Margaret Geiser

If you enjoy animal companionship and want to help the shelter animals but are not able to adopt a pet permanently, we encourage you to participate in our fostering program. Through this program, volunteers care for animals in their homes for a period of time until the animals are adopted or returned to RCHS.

Foster care volunteers open their hearts and homes to a variety of animals, including special-needs animals, such as nursing cats and kittens or animals recovering from surgery. Foster care provides these animals with the safe, loving environment they need to grow strong while freeing up space in our shelter so we can help even more animals that are in need of care.

Fostering is very helpful in preparing an animal for adoption. It gives them a break from the atmosphere of the shelter and helps prepare them for their forever home. If you have children in your home and/or other animals, the fostering experience helps to socialize the animal and increases its chances of being adopted by a wider range of potential families.

Fostering commitments usually last from a few weeks to as long as a few months. RCHS will provide you with everything you need from supplies to training and the support of seasoned foster volunteers.

Although we utilize our foster families year round, our greatest needs are usually in the spring and summer when we generally have a large influx of kittens and puppies.

Fostering is a great way for families or individuals to help homeless pets without committing to permanent adoption.

How You Can Help

RCHS always needs more caring, dedicated people to become foster parents, so if you’re interested in fostering a cat or dog (or two!), please fill out our online fostering inquiry form and we will get back to you soon.

If you have questions, feel free to contact us. We’d love to talk to you about it.
